Woodfire Kiln Rental

Wood firings are a challenging and dynamic part of ceramics. If you are interested in learning about how to fire a wood kiln or renting our kiln for a group or individual firing, we would love to hear from you.

Participants are welcome to camp onsite, rent one of our cabins (limited availability), or commute from a local airBnB.

Typical firings require one full day to load and “brick-up”, 18-40 hours for firing, two days to cool, and one day to unload and clean up.

Kiln Details:

  • Kiln size: 1.00 cubic meters or 35.3 cubic feet

  • Kiln Type: Dual Front Loading down draft kiln (mixed oxidation and reduction atmospheric firing)

  • Stacks: there are four primary stacks in the firing chamber. Each kiln shelf is roughly 35x40cm or 15x15inches

Fees:

  • Whether you want to fire your own kiln or do a group firing, we can work with you to make it happen. Our front-loading wood kiln typically fires between 18-40 hours up to cone 10.

  • Base firing flat fee: $1100 (includes usage instructions, troubleshooting help throughout firing, kiln damage fees, kiln shelf cleaning, and wadding)

  • Wood Cost: based on usage — typically around $300/cord — roughly 1 cord for a 40-hour firing

  • *We ask for a 50% deposit of $550 to reserve the kiln for a specific date.

Additional Policies:

  • We ask that all facilities, including the kiln, be left in the same condition they were received. Some damage to kiln bricks and shelves is to be expected. However, if significant damage to kiln shelves, pyrometers, or surrounding facilities occurs, customers will be responsible for those damages.

  • Firing groups are asked to clean up and remove garbage, personal belongings, glaze buckets, etc. after their firing.

  • If you have questions about glazing, stacking, or firing techniques, we are happy to assist you!

  • In the event of severe inclement weather, we will either reschedule or provide a full refund. Any deposit can be refunded if rescheduling isn’t possible.

PLEASE BRING:

  • Enough pots or work to fill the kiln, any cone 10 glazes you are interested in using, anything you need to unpack and pack unfired and fired work

  • Outdoor attire and clothing you don’t mind getting dirty — including closed-toe shoes, long sleeve shirts

  • Your own food/drinks

  • work gloves
